OPD - Overfill Prevention Device
What You Need to Know about OPD Cylinder Exchange

Jet Gas is now installing OPD valves in all of its 20 lb. exchange cylinders and has selected the best in quality, incorporating the latest in high flow and maximum BTU capacity while decreasing purging time.

The National Fire Protection Association - NFPA Pamphlet 58 1998 Edition mandates the following OPD requirements:

  • All new 20# cylinders manufactured after October 1, 1998 require an OPD valve. Excluded are forklift, welding and cutting gas cylinders.
  • In April, 2002, before refilling, all existing cylinders will require an OPD valve.

How to Identify an OPD Cylinder for Exchange

Acceptable Exchange Criteria

OPD Cylinders will be exchanged with only a charge for the propane if the cylinder meets the following checklist. If the tank has one of the following defects listed below, do not exchange for it since this tank will not be usable again.

  • Missing OPD valve handles will require a complete valve upgrade and therefore a valve upgrade charge.
  • Cylinders with old POL or QCC valves must satisfy the same checklist listed below to be acceptable for exchange. With these valves, the charge will be for the propane in the tank plus the valve upgrade.

To assure your safety and proper operation, all propane exchange cylinders must meet local, state and federal regulations. In accordance with NFPA 58 standards and NPGA Safety Bulletin No. 118,

  • PROTECTIVE COLLAR20# cylinders without collar are not approved for exchange.
  • FOOT RING. 20# cylinders without foot ring are not approved for exchange.
  • GAS VALVE. 20# cylinders without gas valve are not approved for exchange.
  • EXCESSIVE RUST. 20# cylinders with excessive rust are not approved for exchange.
  • EXCESSIVE DENTS. 20# cylinders with excessive dents are not approved for exchange.
  • OK! Cylinders with a 4" Protective Collar, Foot Ring, Upright Gas Valve, No Rust or Dents are approved for exchange.

Federal and State regulations require hauling propane cylinders secured in a vertical position.

PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR AN EXCEPTION.

OPD Return Policy

The Jet Gas Cylinder Exchange Program was developed as a "tank-for-tank" exchange. Upon installation of the cabinet, no deposits are charged and you are only billed for the propane in the cylinder.

Return Policy Outside of Exchange Cylinder

NO CREDIT will be issued for cylinders returned by customers because they are no longer using the cylinder. We recommend, when selling a cylinder outright, that the customer be advised of this "No Return" policy.

Jet Gas also urges you not to accept any extra cylinders from customers looking to dispose of them. Rather, ask them to take them to their local propane supplier.
